# Xpress and Xtend
**Domain:** Austin Research / Programs
**Doc Type:** Research entity
**Source basis:** Supplied research cluster with linked references; see the [[wiki/Austin Research Evidence Map|evidence map]] for verification scope.
**Xpress and Xtend** were complementary intelligence challenges described in 2017 [[wiki/Office of the Director of National Intelligence|ODNI]] announcements. Xpress concerned machine-assisted generation of analytical products; Xtend concerned machine-based review and evaluation of those products.
Their relationship makes two functions independently visible: producing an interpretation and judging its analytical quality. The ODIN article places them in a broader transition toward machines participating in perception, synthesis, and evaluation.
The challenge objectives are research aims rather than evidence that fully autonomous intelligence production had been operationally achieved. They connect naturally to the corpus’s distinction between generating candidate representations and assessing their reliability.
